How Fog Nets Harvest Water from the Air

A

In dry coastal mountains, communities sometimes experience thick fog even when rainfall is scarce. Fog consists of tiny liquid droplets suspended near the ground, unlike the invisible water vapour that makes up much of the atmosphere’s moisture. As winds carry fog past a hillside, some droplets collide with leaves, branches or other surfaces. Scientists studying this natural process began investigating whether artificial screens could capture enough droplets to provide useful water. The resulting fog nets do not manufacture water and cannot work reliably in every climate; they simply intercept liquid that is already moving through the air. Their effectiveness depends on the frequency of fog, local wind patterns and the location of the collecting surface.

B

A typical fog collector stretches a mesh between sturdy posts facing the prevailing wind. Small droplets strike the fibres and gradually combine into larger drops. Gravity pulls those drops downward until they reach a trough attached to the bottom edge, which carries the liquid through a pipe to a storage tank. The size and spacing of openings in the mesh are important: a very dense screen may divert the airflow around it, while an overly open screen allows many droplets through without contact. Some designs use two layers of mesh to increase collection, though a second layer can also increase wind pressure on the supporting structure.

C

Choosing a site requires more than finding a foggy photograph. Engineers measure the direction and strength of the wind, examine seasonal patterns and assess the risks from storms. A net placed on the sheltered side of a hill may collect little water, even when fog appears to cover the whole area. Strong gusts can damage posts, so anchors must be checked regularly. Dust, insects and algae can accumulate on mesh and in gutters, making maintenance essential. Water quality must also be tested, because collecting droplets from the air does not automatically make the result safe to drink. Communities may use filters or disinfection before sending the water to homes.

D

Fog collection is often considered for small, remote communities because nets require relatively little energy during normal operation. Nevertheless, output can vary sharply from one day to another, and large storage tanks may be needed to bridge periods without fog. Nets are therefore usually planned as a supplement to wells, rainwater systems or delivered supplies, not as a guaranteed replacement. Researchers are studying new fibre shapes and coatings that help drops drain faster, but local testing remains crucial. A successful pilot records both the volume collected and the hours spent on cleaning, repairs and monitoring. These figures help residents decide whether expanding the system would be practical and affordable.
