Why Some Libraries Preserve the Smell of Old Books

A

When people enter a historic library, they sometimes notice a faint scent resembling vanilla, dry grass or old wood. This smell is not added by librarians to make a room inviting. It develops as paper, adhesives and binding materials slowly change with age. Researchers can collect tiny samples of the air surrounding a book and identify gases released during that process. Although the scent often inspires nostalgia, conservators treat it as one source of information about the materials inside a collection rather than a reliable sign that a book is healthy.

B

Much nineteenth-century paper was made using wood pulp and chemical processes that left it relatively acidic. Over decades, acids can weaken the fibres that hold a sheet together, causing pages to yellow or become brittle. This change can release small molecules with distinctive odours. Books made from cotton or linen fibres may age differently, as can modern paper manufactured with alkaline additives. Consequently, two equally old books might produce quite different scents. A book's smell alone cannot tell a reader its exact age or value; the paper, ink and binding must also be examined.

C

Scientists studying book collections sometimes use a technique that measures compounds in the surrounding air without removing a visible piece of paper. The approach is appealing because museums cannot routinely cut samples from rare volumes. By comparing air measurements with laboratory tests on reference materials, researchers hope to identify collections that may require attention. Yet the results can be influenced by furniture polish, visitors' perfume, storage boxes or air circulating from another room. For that reason, conservators collect repeated measurements and record conditions around the object instead of treating a single reading as decisive.

D

Preserving old books requires more than eliminating an unpleasant smell. Stable temperatures, moderate humidity, clean storage materials and careful handling can slow deterioration. Sealing every book in an airtight case, however, is not necessarily the best solution: moisture trapped inside may encourage mould, while some enclosures concentrate chemicals released from the paper. Preservation teams therefore choose packaging suited to each item and monitor changes over time. The aim is to make books available for future study, not to restore the exact aroma they had when first printed.
